History of Elkhorn, Wisconsin

Colonel Samuel Phoenix named the area Elk Horn after spotting a rack of elk antlers caught in a tree. The area’s pristine beauty and fertile soils caught the attention of Daniel Bradley, his brother Milo, and LeGrand Rockwell. They sought to create a village; by 1846, Elkhorn boasted a population of 539. The first town meeting was held that year. Elkhorn has remained relatively unscathed by modernization and stays true to its roots as an idyllic small town. With a population of less than 2,000, Elkhorn retains a close-knit community feel. The surrounding countryside is still lush and green, providing ample hiking, fishing, and picnicking opportunities. Visitors can step back in time and experience life in a simpler era.

Elkhorn is a beautiful town located in the center of Walworth County. It is the county seat and serves as the host community for many organizations and events. One of the most prominent features of Elkhorn is the County Government Center, which is surrounded by a beautiful park. This park has a lot of history associated with it. For instance, during World War II, it was the gathering place for families who were saying goodbye to their soldiers. Later, it became known as the "Christmas Card Town" because of its unique Christmas decorations.

The town is commemorated yearly in a series of oil paintings by resident artist Jan Castle Reed. The paintings depict the town's historical landmarks and have become known as the "Christmas Card Town." The tradition began in the 1950s with a series of watercolor paintings by Cecil Johnson. The paintings were later used for Christmas cards by the Ford Motor Company. Today, the tradition continues through Reed's artwork and the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce sponsorship. If you're ever in the area during the holiday season, check out the "Christmas Card Town" for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
