History of Elkhorn, Wisconsin
Colonel Samuel Phoenix named the area Elk Horn after spotting a rack of elk antlers caught in a tree. The area’s pristine beauty and fertile soils caught the attention of Daniel Bradley, his brother Milo, and LeGrand Rockwell. They sought to create a village; by 1846, Elkhorn boasted a population of 539. The first town meeting was held that year. Elkhorn has remained relatively unscathed by modernization and stays true to its roots as an idyllic small town. With a population of less than 2,000, Elkhorn retains a close-knit community feel. The surrounding countryside is still lush and green, providing ample hiking, fishing, and picnicking opportunities. Visitors can step back in time and experience life in a simpler era.
