History Of Minnetonka, Minnesota

Minnetonka is a suburb of Minneapolis and St. Paul, located on the western shore of Lake Minnetonka. The area was first inhabited by the Dakota people, who called it "Mahkato." The first European visitors arrived in the area in the early 18th century and soon established fur trading posts.

In 1852, the Minnesota Territory was created, and one of its first acts was establishing Minnetonka County. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1854 and soon established farms and villages. The village of Minnetonka was officially incorporated in 1858.

The city of Minnetonka experienced rapid growth in the late 19th century as Minneapolis and St. Paul became increasingly industrialized. The population of Minnetonka more than doubled between 1880 and 1900, and many new businesses and industries were established.

Minnetonka continued to grow steadily in the 20th century. The population reached 21,000 by 1950 and 33,000 by 1970. The city has recently experienced a slowdown in growth but remains a thriving community with over 38,000 residents.

The average household size was 2.43, and the average family size was 2.96.

The median age in the city was 37 years. 25.2% of residents were under 18; 6.9% were between 18 and 24; 30% were from 25 to 44; 27.3% were from 45 to 64, and 10.7% were 65 or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.6% male and 51.4% female.
