History of Oak Creek, Wisconsin

Oak Creek is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 35,154 at the 2010 census. To the north and south, Oak Creek is bordered by Cudahy, Franklin to the east, and Milwaukee to the west.

Oak Creek was incorporated as a village on November 15, 1957, from parts of Cudahy and Franklin townships. The earliest known inhabitants of what would become Oak Creek were Native Americans who lived along the shores of Lake Michigan and its tributaries. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oak Creek were French missionaries and fur traders who arrived in 1673.

In 1835, George Johnson settled in what would later become Oak Creek. He erected a mill on Cedar Creek (now known as Dineen Park), which provided power for his sawmill and gristmill. Other settlers followed, including John Deere, who invented his famous self-polishing plow near present-day College Avenue and Ryan Road.

The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad reached Oak Creek in 1859, spurring further development. A post office was established in 1865. In 1892, the first schoolhouse was built on land donated by Johnson.

Oak Creek continued to grow throughout the 20th century. The population increased from just over 1,000 in 1950 to 35,154 in 2010. Today, Oak Creek is a thriving community with a solid industrial base, diverse housing stock, and quality schools and parks.

Oak Creek is located in southeastern Wisconsin, about 10 miles (16 km) south of downtown Milwaukee and 50 miles (80 km) north of Chicago. The city is part of the Greater Milwaukee metropolitan area.
