Cottage Grove is a city in Washington County, Minnesota. The population was 35,302 at the 2010 census. It is one of the eastern suburbs of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Cottage Grove is adjacent to the southern edge of Saint Paul and about 15 miles (24 km) east-southeast of Minneapolis. Interstate 94 and U.S. Highway 61 are two of the main routes in Cottage Grove. The city is situated on the north bank of the Mississippi River near its confluence with the St. Croix River. Cottage Grove includes most of Dellwood, Minnesota, and part of Grey Cloud Island Township; these places were incorporated into the city in 1997 and 2000. The city's motto is "The Good Life."
History of Cottage Grove, Minnesota
Cottage Grove's first claim to fame came in 1858 when the first bridge opened for traffic. The original wooden structure, known as the "Lake St. Croix Crossing, was replaced by a steel truss bridge in 1889. The current bridge built-1963 is officially named the "St. Paul Avenue Bridge." It is scheduled to be replaced in 2020.
Cottage Grove also played an essential role in the early years of Minnesota's logging industry. In 1839, Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant established a logging camp on the Mississippi River banks near Grey Cloud Island Township. This camp served as the starting point for many early logging drives downriver to St. Louis, Missouri.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cottage Grove was a popular resort destination for Twin Cities residents. The city's many lakes, including Grey Cloud Island Lake, Black Dash Lake, and Indian Head Creek Lake, were drawers for anglers and swimmers.
