History of Moorhead, Minnesota

Moorhead, Minnesota, is located in Clay County, in the Red River Valley of the north-central part of the state. The population was 38,059 at the 2010 census. The city was incorporated in 1881.

The city was founded by and named for Colonel William G. Moorhead, who was killed in action during the American Civil War. Europeans settled Moorhead in the 1850s due to the Red River Oxcart Trail. The city became a major rail center with the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1871.
