History of Oshkosh

Oshkosh, Wisconsin, has a long and rich history dating back to the early 1800s. Menominee Chief Oshkosh founded the city, and it grew rapidly as a hub for the lumber industry. In 1853, Oshkosh was designated as the county seat of Winnebago County and continued to prosper throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, Oshkosh is a thriving community that still retains its small-town charm. 

Oshkosh Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 66,083 people, 26,769 households, and 15,207 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,682.6 inhabitants per square mile (651.3/km2). There were 28,196 housing units at an average density of 717.7 per square mile (277.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 86.4% White, 3.1% African American, 1.8% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 3.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.

There were 26,769 households, of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.6% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.9% had someone who was 65 years of age or older living alone. The average household size was 2.35, and the average family size was 3.04.

The median age in the city was 32 years. 23% of residents were under 18; 15.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 28.6% were from 25 to 44; 19.7% were from 45 to 64, and 13.4% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.0% male and 51.0% female.
