History of Janesville, Wisconsin
Janesville, Wisconsin, was founded in 1836 by a land speculator and future governor of Wisconsin, James Duane Doty. The city was initially named "Doty's Island" after its founder, but it was later renamed Janesville in honor of General Andrew Jackson's Secretary of War, John H. Eaton.
