History of Janesville, Wisconsin

Janesville, Wisconsin, was founded in 1836 by a land speculator and future governor of Wisconsin, James Duane Doty. The city was initially named "Doty's Island" after its founder, but it was later renamed Janesville in honor of General Andrew Jackson's Secretary of War, John H. Eaton. The early years of Janesville were marked by growth and prosperity, thanks partly to the city's location on the Rock River and its proximity to the Black Hawk Warpath.

However, the city's growth was also hampered by several natural disasters, including a tornado in 1857 and a significant fire in 1875. Despite these challenges, Janesville continued to grow and thrive, reaching a population of over 10,000 by the turn of the century.

The 20th century brought even more growth and change to Janesville. The city became a center of the automotive industry with the opening of several assembly plants, most notably General Motors' plant, in 1918. Janesville also played a significant role in World War II as the home of the Rock County Army Air Base.
