History of Manitowoc, Wisconsin
In 1608, a Jesuit missionary named Father Jacques Marquette and his fur trader partner Louis Joliet became the first Europeans to explore the area that is now Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The area was inhabited by the Potawatomi and Menominee Native American tribes at the time.
The first permanent European settlers in Manitowoc arrived in 1836. They were a group of German immigrants who had traveled to the United States from Westphalia.
