History of Blaine, Minnesota

On January 7, 1866, the Township of Blaine was organized. It had been part of Ramsey County since 1849, but the new township was carved out of sections that were not in the city limits of St. Paul and Minneapolis. In 1870, the first train arrived in Blaine, bringing goods and people into the town. The railroad played a massive role in Blaine’s development and helped it grow rapidly.

Blaine became a vital regional transportation hub, with freight moving in and out on railroads and waterways. This helped make it a center for commerce and industry. On November 11, 1893, Blaine was incorporated as a village. The population had grown to 1,500 by this time. The early 1900s were a time of tremendous growth for Blaine. New businesses opened up, including banks and grocery stores, and more people moved into the town. In 1918, there was even a brief attempt to make Blaine an independent city from Ramsey County!

The 1920s brought more change to Blaine. The village grew to include over 4,000 residents, and dozens of businesses emerged along its main street. A new water tower and electric plant were built, providing the town with modern amenities. The Great Depression hit Blaine hard, but the city managed to weather the economic storm.
