History of Wausau, Wisconsin

The first inhabitants of the area were the Menominee people. They arrived around 10,000 BC and established a village near Rib Mountain. Around 1000 AD, they replaced the Ho-Chunk people. The Ho-Chunk built a town Real Estate & Homes For Sale at Wausau's present-day downtown site.

They named the village "Wausau," which means "Earth Matters" or "Faraway." The Ho-Chunk were forcibly removed from their homeland by the US government in 1848 and relocated to a reservation in Minnesota. In 1851, a group of settlers from Ohio arrived in the Wausau area and founded a town called Big Bull Falls. The town was renamed Wausau in 1856. The paper industry was established in Wausau in 1876 with the opening of a paper mill. The city became known as the "Paper City" because of its paper industry. In the early 20th century, the paper industry dominated the city's economy.
