History of Kenosha, Wisconsin 

Kenosha is a city in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. Kenosha is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and the South Shore region.

Kenosha was named after Gen. Antoine Laumet de la Mothe Cadillac, founded in Detroit in 1701. Originally part of Racine County, Kenosha County was created in 1836 as an organized county by taking land from Walworth and Milwaukee counties. In 1885, Kensington was renamed Kenosha.

The history of Kenosha, Wisconsin, can be traced back to 1673 when French missionary Jacques Marquette discovered what would later be called Lake Michigan while paddling down the Fox River. His discovery led to centuries of French exploration and colonization in North America. 

In 1682, René-Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle claimed all of the Great Lakes for France. This claim held up under international law until 1783 when Britain gained control following its victory over France in the Revolutionary War.

Demography of Kenosha, Wisconsin 

Kenosha is located at the southwestern corner of Lake Michigan in southeastern Wisconsin, about 50 mi (80 km) north of Chicago and 40 mi (64 km) south of Milwaukee. The city center lies along the shore of Kenosha Harbor, a deep-water harbor that forms part of the entrance to the lake. According to the United States Census Bureau, Kenosha has a total area of 24.87 square miles (64.41 km2), of which 22.76 square miles (58.93 km2) are land, and 2.11 square miles (5.48 km2) are water. The total area is 8.47% water.

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Kenosha has a humid continental climate, abbreviated as "Dfa" on climate maps. The average January temperature is 27.2 °F (−2.7 °C), and the average July temperature is 75.4 °F (24.1 °C). There are an average of 6.5 days with highs of 90°F (32°C) or higher and an average of 19.3 days with lows of 20°F (−7°C) or lower.

As of the census of 2010, there were 99,889 people, 40,438 households, and 23,929 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,374.3 inhabitants per square mile (1,688.6/km2). There were 43,164 housing units at an average density of 1,893.5 per square mile (730.0/km2). The city's racial makeup was 66.4% White, 14.9% African American, 0.8% Native American, 1.5% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 12.7% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races.
