History of East Bethel, Minnesota
East Bethel is a city in Anoka County, Minnesota. It is located northeast of the Twin Cities Metro area. The city's boundaries include the townships of Bethel, Dale, and Clover Springs. East Bethel was incorporated as a township in 1858 and later became a city in 1974. The city's name is derived from the Bible and means "House of God." The city's original settlers were Chippewa Indians who arrived in the 1850s. In 1837, the United States bought its lands east of the Mississippi River in what was later the State of Minnesota. The first white settlers began arriving in the area in the 1850s.
In the spring of 1957, a local committee was formed to take the necessary legal steps to incorporate. On May 3, 1957, the petition was presented to the Anoka County Board of Commissioners, and, as a result of the required election, incorporation was approved by 232 to 161 votes. This vote was challenged, and the matter was eventually sent to the Minnesota Supreme Court and the State Legislature for validation. East Bethel was officially incorporated as a Village on April 27, 1959, and as a City on January 1, 1974. East Bethel is a thriving community with a strong sense of identity today.
