History of Cloquet, Minnesota
The St. Louis River has played an essential role in the history of the City of Cloquet and Carlton County. St. Louis and other county rivers were important waterways for early native people (the Dakota and the Ojibwe). They supported a whole industry during the fur trade, beginning in the mid-1700s. Later the rivers served as the lifelines of the lumber industry, which started in the county in the 1870s. The City of Cloquet grew on the banks of St. Louis, and the river continues to be a centerpiece for recreation and vitally important to the city industry.
The arrival of railroads in the 1870s spurred the growth of the timber and agricultural industries in Cloquet, and the city soon became an important economic center in Carlton County. Cloquet became a city in 1904 with a mayor and common council form of government. Many early industries and farming workers were immigrants from over a dozen European countries and Canada, which, when mixed with the strong native culture, provided the rich cultural heritage still enjoyed by succeeding generations.
The fire of 1918 was a turning point in the history of Cloquet. The great fire burned over 38,000 acres and destroyed sixteen city blocks and more than 400 homes and businesses. It is considered the worst natural disaster to strike Minnesota and one of the most catastrophic forest fires in American history.
In the 1930s, Cloquet experienced the beginning of a new industry by opening paper mills. Evergreen Packaging and Clopay Corporation are still significant employers today.
