History of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin

Whitefish Bay is a beautiful community located on the shores of Lake Michigan. The area was first inhabited by Native Americans, who used the bay as a fishing ground. In the 19th century, Whitefish Bay became a popular spot for summer visitors across the Midwest. The bay was also home to several farms, which supplied fresh produce to the nearby city of Milwaukee.

Whitefish Bay's incorporation as Milwaukee County's first village resulted from residents' desire to send their children to school close to home. Before the village was incorporated on May 10, 1892, the only available school was several miles distant. Parents asked for a nearby school, but the Town of Milwaukee declined their petition. George Rogers, who published the Whitefish Bay Pioneer, initiated a campaign for a village charter to permit the formation of a local school district to serve the area’s growing population. An official census demonstrated that over three hundred people lived in the area and met the requirements of Wisconsin law. The new village president, Fred Isenring, immediately appointed a school committee. Thanks to their efforts, Whitefish Bay students no longer had to travel far to get an education. Today, the village is home to several excellent schools, including Whitefish Bay High School, which consistently ranked among the best in the state.

Whitefish Bay is named for a small bay of Lake Michigan on its western shore. Native Americans originally occupied Whitefish Bay from the surrounding areas. The Potawatomi were the first documented people to settle in Whitefish Bay in the 1600s. The name "Whitefish Bay" comes from the Potawatomi word "Paramashka," meaning "place of the white fish." The Potawatomi also settled in the nearby villages of Bayside and Fox Point. In 1763, when the area was part of New France, it became part of Great Britain's French colony of Canada after the Seven Years' War. Great Britain ceded the land east of the Mississippi River to the United States in 1783. In 1836, two men from Whitefish Bay landed on Madeline Island, becoming the first known white settlers in Ashland County, Wisconsin. The government of Louis Philippe had sent Nicolas Perrot to negotiate.

Whitefish Bay is home to several small businesses and manufacturing plants. The boutiques along Silver Spring Drive are a destination for many in the region. The original inhabitants of the Whitefish Bay area were Native Americans. French explorers arrived in the 18th century and established trading posts. In 1835, Whitefish Bay was officially organized as a town. The first residents were farmers who settled near the Milwaukee River. Fishing and logging were also significant industries in the town. In the late 19th century, wealthy residents from Milwaukee began building summer homes in Whitefish Bay. These “cottages” were large and elaborate, and many still stand today. In 1900, the Village of Whitefish Bay was incorporated. During the early 20th century, Whitefish Bay became a popular resort destination for Milwaukee residents. Visitors came to enjoy the beaches, boating, and fishing. The village also had several hotels and dance halls. In 1917, the North Shore Congregational Church was built. This building is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1920s, Whitefish Bay experienced a building boom. New homes and businesses were constructed, and the population grew rapidly. The Great Depression and World War II brought hard times to Whitefish Bay, but the village soon rebounded. The post-war years were a time of great prosperity, and many new homes and businesses were built. Whitefish Bay continued to grow in the second half of the 20th century. In the 1990s, the village embarked on a major downtown revitalization project. Silver Spring Drive was renovated, and new businesses were attracted to the area.

Today, Whitefish Bay is a vibrant community with a strong sense of identity. The village is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and friendly residents. Whitefish Bay is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
