John Bannister, the first surveyor to explore this region, reported that "the Rock River Valley was beautiful and fertile." He recommended it for settlement because of its powerhouse location on one of America's most important rivers and pleasant weather.
Waupun was founded in 1836 by Seymour Wilcox, who came to the area with two friends interested in the land's potential for settlement. The city is named after the Menominee Indian word for "prairie" or "meadow." Waupun quickly became known as a friendly Midwestern community, and it continues to be known for its high quality of life and many recreational opportunities.
