History of Waunakee, Wisconsin

The land the Village of Waunakee currently occupies is Teejob, the ancestral territory of the Hoocakra (Ho-Chuck Nation), People of the Sacred Voice. The Ho-Chuck Nation lived in this area for centuries before the European migration. Six Mile Creek and the adjacent woodlands and prairies provided an ideal environment for gathering, cultivating food, and building homes. Archaeologists have discovered evidence of Native American interaction with the land in the Waunakee area dating back thousands of years, including keyhole dwellings, pottery sherds, tools, and projectile points.

In 1836, Civil War veteran Charles Micajah Bagley arrived in the area with his wife Sophia and their children. Drawn by the fertile soil and abundant game. They built a log cabin near present-day Glacier Valley Elementary School and acquired more land over time. As more settlers arrived in the area, Bagley donated land for a cemetery, a church, and a schoolhouse. In 1892, the villagers voted to incorporate as a town, and in 1931 the town was renamed Waunakee after Chief Waunakee of the Ho-Chuck Nation. Today, Waunakee is a thriving community with a rich history that is still being written. We invite you to come and be a part of it. Thank you for considering us as your new home.
