History of Watertown, Wisconsin
Watertown, Wisconsin, was initially called Johnson's Rapids because it sat on the border between Jefferson and Dodge counties. But after an influx of settlers from Watertown in New York came to this area around 1842-43, they changed their name to honor its most famous native son: Captain John Soper. He fought for independence against Britain during America’s revolutionary war!
The first documented grain mill opened up here near what would become downtown back then - powered primarily by water power generated at two hydroelectric dams built in 1885.
