History of Shorewood, Wisconsin

In 1673, French explorer Pere Jacques Marquette and his voyageurs canoed past this heavily wooded area overlooking Lake Michigan. Sioux and Algonquin Indians hunted here. Explorers and trappers soon joined them.

In the early 1800s, the first settlers arrived, attracted by the dense forests and plentiful game. They cleared the land for farming and built log cabins. By the mid-1800s, the population had grown enough to support a village named Shorewood, after the beautiful lakeshore setting.

The village flourished in the early 1900s as a resort destination, with Ferris wheels and trolley cars transporting visitors to the shores of Lake Michigan. Eventually, Shorewood became a suburb of Milwaukee, and its tree-lined streets became a haven for families seeking a quiet place to call home.

Today, Shorewood is a thriving community of over 25,000 people. The village has excellent schools, beautiful parks, and safe neighborhoods. There is something for everyone in Shorewood!
