History of Salem Lakes, Wisconsin
In June 1837, John Dodge became the first settler in Salem proper. Shortly after that, General Bullen and David Bullen settled on the east bank of the Fox River and surveyed and platted a village, hoping to make Salem the main head of Fox River navigation. A bridge spanning the river was called "Bullen's Bridge." The first school was taught in a log cabin near where the Village Hall now stands. The quick success of the community is evident in that by 1844, the population had grown to 500 people.
Completing the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad in 1853 brought prosperity and growth to Salem. Industry soon followed with such firms as Globe Manufacturing Company (1854), us today as Monsanto Company (1856), Cadwell Laboratory (1920), and Belvidere-Salem Transportation Company (1922) setting up operations here. Migrants from New England began arriving in large numbers and greatly influenced Salem's culture and architecture. Many of these homes still stand today and add significantly to Salem's charm. The Victorian-style Leland Hotel, constructed in 1879, housed some early settlers. Today it is home to a bed and breakfast inn and a museum operated by the Historical Society. Salem continues to grow and prosper as a vibrant community with a rich history.

The racial makeup of the village was 84.2% White, 0.8% African American, 0.5% Native American, 12.1% Asian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.7% of the population.
