History of River Falls, Wisconsin

In 1848, a veteran of the Mexican War named Joel Foster heard about this beautiful region near Hudson Bay from his host. The area was then home to less than 2 thousand people, including counties St Croix & Polk and Pierce Country in Minnesota Territory at that time! He explored upriver until he reached these gorgeous falls where two American Indian Tribes lived -the Sioux and Chippewa- who valued their land so much they would not claim any sortation over it even though many opportunities were available, waiting for someone with ambition enough to take them. Joel Foster was that man, and he set up a claim as the first permanent white settler in River Falls on September 2, 1848.

The falls themselves are created by the Kinnickinnic River, which is a beautiful trout stream that runs through some of the most pristine woodlands and meadows you'll ever see. The river comes from an Indian word meaning "clear water" or "pure water." And it's easy to see why - the water is so clean and clear that you can often spot fish swimming through it!

The pair had set up their winter cabin along the banks of Kinnickinnic River, about half a mile south from where it merged with St. Croix Falls and just north over reading's Bridge into downtown Hudson. Using split logs, they'd dug out a pit for storage purposes and to create room inside; once this was done, there were still many tasks left before completion - including heating water to make mud which would later serve them well when shaping bricks without any firewood available!

The first white settlers arrived in 1848, and over the next few years, they helped shape River Falls into what we know today. The winter following their arrival saw Foster & Dick complete construction on Fort foster - a log cabin that would later serve as both home base for two more families who filed westward claims along with its tenant farmers; also built that year were root cellars near where downtown buildings now stand. One such family became known throughout a time when pioneers called them "the father" because he taught so many ways to grow food without soil: Nellie Messenger spins tales from his legacy here every day while customers shop at her garden center named after him - Gardener's Gables!

The community prospered, and in 1854 the Wisconsin territorial legislature created Pierce County with River Falls as the county seat. The first courthouse and jail were built on the River Falls Public Library site. In 1856, a two-story frame building was constructed to house the county offices and serve as a community hall. The Old Courthouse is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1857, the first bridge across the Kinnickinnic River was built at reading's Landing. This bridge allowed more accessible access to Hudson and helped spur economic growth in River Falls. Another bridge was built across the St. Croix River at River Falls the following year. This bridge, known as the Old Bridge, was used by stagecoaches and wagons carrying goods between Minneapolis and St. Paul. The military also used it during the Dakota Conflict of 1862. The bridge was eventually replaced by a new bridge in 1916.
