The village of Richfield is located in south-central Washington County. It was settled in the 1840s by farmers and small hamlets. The first white settler to purchase land in the area was Samuel Spivey, who bought 160 acres in June 1841.

Richfield was officially incorporated as a town on January 21, 1846. Farming was the primary occupation of Richfield's residents during this time. Two railroad lines were built in the nineteenth century, which connected Richfield to larger population centers like Milwaukee. The railway lines allowed for transporting goods and people, making Richfield more accessible to the outside world. Thanks to the railways, Richfield grew and prospered as a community.
