The village of Richfield is located in south-central Washington County. It was settled in the 1840s by farmers and small hamlets. The first white settler to purchase land in the area was Samuel Spivey, who bought 160 acres in June 1841.

Richfield was officially incorporated as a town on January 21, 1846. Farming was the primary occupation of Richfield's residents during this time.
