History of Portage, Wisconsin

In 1836, the federal government created the Wisconsin Territory and designated Portage as its county seat. The first courthouse was built of logs in 1837. That same year, the town of Portage was created by an act of the territorial legislature, and Whitney was elected its first chairman. Portage was incorporated in 1839, with a population of about 500. The first schoolhouse was built in 1840. In 1846, the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad reached Portage, making it a convenient shipping point for farm products and lumber. The city grew rapidly, reaching a population of 2,000 by 1850. The growing city soon outgrew its log cabin beginnings, and brick buildings began to replace the old log cabins. The first newspaper, the Portage City Register, was founded in 1853.

The city continued to grow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A new courthouse was built in 1884, and a high school was built in 1902. The first hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, opened in 1907. Portage became a first-class city in 1913. In World War II, the United States Army built Camp Williams outside Portage to train soldiers for combat. The camp served as a prisoner-of-war camp for German soldiers.

Portage today is a thriving city with a diverse economy. Agriculture is still important to the city, and Portage is home to several food processing plants. Portage has a variety of manufacturing businesses, including several that make parts for the aerospace industry. The city's historic downtown is revitalizing, with new shops and restaurants in restored buildings. There are also many parks and recreation opportunities in Portage, including golf courses, hiking and biking trails, and water sports on the Fox River.

Demographics of Portage, Wisconsin

Portage is a city in Columbia County. The population was 10,662 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Columbia County. The racial makeup of the town was 92.8% White, 1.0% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.5% Asian, 2.9% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.

The Census reported that 10,544 people (99.0% of the population) lived in households, 118 (1.1%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 0 (0%) were institutionalized. There were 3,978 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 30.8% were non-families 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
