History of Onalaska, Wisconsin

The scenic beauty of the Onalaska area results from great glaciers that bypass this town. The steep rocks, winding valleys, and fertile river bottom made it an attractive place for habitation as far back as 8 thousand BC when Native Americans lived in small mobile families groups called bands or tribes.

Many centuries later (around 1000 AD), another group named Oneota would come into existence - they were noted mainly because their farming methods had begun to use other crops besides just hunting & fishing, which helped them tremendously with food supplies; these include sunflowers, chenopodium, gourds, and squash.

The first Europeans to come into the area were the French, who established a few trading posts and Catholic missions - they frequently clashed with the British as both empires sought to expand their influence in North America. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris was signed, giving Great Britain control of the Onalaska area. The British would soon be pushed out by American Revolutionary War veterans who had been given land grants in Wisconsin as a thank-you for their service.

The town of Onalaska is built on a ridge overlooking Lake Geneva and the Black River. The name "Onashla" came from Thomas Campbell's poem, “The Pleasures of Hope." When he decided to use only one 'o' in his surname for this new settlement near railroads that would eventually link all parts eastward as well as westwards across America-it was an easy decision because so many fascinating things lay right at every turn along these newly opened paths into brightness!
