History of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin

The town of Oconomowoc was first established as a trading post by Aumable Vicau; it wasn't until 1837 that Charles Sheldon settled down to make his home in the area. He quickly became one with nature and founded what would eventually become known as "Sheila's Lodge" or 'scientists' headquarters.' In just 40 years - from 1830-to 1850--this little village grew into an incorporated city that thrived on its location at the intersection between three major rivers (Oconnoroupar River/Lac La Belle shores)and due northward along Lake Michigan, where fishing rights were accorded to all. The city's convenient location, harmonious relationship with the Native Americans who still inhabited the land, and a strong sense of community made it a desirable destination for settlers looking for a new home.

The town of Oconomowoc became a popular destination for wealthy people in the late 1800s, including six U.S presidents, to enjoy its beauty and lifestyle.

In 1869 The Draper Hall Hotel was built by Dr. George Atex Brainerd, which quickly grew into one most elegant hotels on Lake Michigan until it burned down less than two years later in 1871. Some notable guests included Abraham Lincoln, who spent his honeymoon there with his wife Mary Todd after they were married following her marriage ket Citysol Joseph Medill styled "the richest man in America" when he stayed at our hotel for three weeks during July & August 1860.

The population of Oconomowoc exploded following the Civil War as waves of German and Irish immigrants arrived looking for a better life. These new residents brought their own cultures and traditions, which quickly began to integrate into the city's fabric. This period of growth and change continued into the early 20th century, as Oconomowoc became a popular tourist destination. The city's scenic beauty and proximity to Wisconsin's largest city made it an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Oconomowoc's many architecturally significant buildings are evident in the city's lengthy history and rich cultural heritage. The Octagon House, built-in 1857, is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. This unique building was designed by Dr. Nelson Wood, a local doctor and amateur architect, and was inspired by the octagon houses that were popular in the United States at the time. The Octagon House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open for tours.

Another notable building in Oconomowoc is the Pabst Mansion, built-in 1893 for Captain Frederick Pabst, the founder of the Pabst Brewing Company. The Tudor Revival-style mansion is one of the finest examples of Victorian architecture in Wisconsin and features a grand staircase, stained glass windows, and intricate woodwork. The Pabst Mansion is now a museum devoted to Captain Pabst, his family, and the history of brewing in Wisconsin.

The city of Oconomowoc is located in Waukesha County, in southeastern Wisconsin. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 15,712. The racial makeup of the city was 94.4% White, 1.0% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.9% Asian, 0.6% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population. The median income for a household in the city was $62,830, and the median income for a family was $76,849. The per capita income for the city was $31,311. About 1.1% of families and 2.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.5% of those under age 18 and none aged 65 or over.
