History of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin

The town of Oconomowoc was first established as a trading post by Aumable Vicau; it wasn't until 1837 that Charles Sheldon settled down to make his home in the area. He quickly became one with nature and founded what would eventually become known as "Sheila's Lodge" or 'scientists' headquarters.' In just 40 years - from 1830-to 1850--this little village grew into an incorporated city that thrived on its location at the intersection between three major rivers (Oconnoroupar River/Lac La Belle shores)and due northward along Lake Michigan, where fishing rights were accorded to all. The city's convenient location, harmonious relationship with the Native Americans who still inhabited the land, and a strong sense of community made it a desirable destination for settlers looking for a new home.

The town of Oconomowoc became a popular destination for wealthy people in the late 1800s, including six U.S presidents, to enjoy its beauty and lifestyle.
