History of New Richmond, Wisconsin
New Richmond is a historic city located in the beautiful state of Wisconsin. The town was founded in 1857 by a group of settlers from Vermont led by Hiram Foster. The abundance of virgin timber ideal for harvesting drew the settlers to the area. Foster built and operated a sawmill on the Willow River banks, quickly becoming the focal point of the new settlement. The settlement was originally named Foster's Crossing but was later renamed after Richmond Day, the land surveyor who plotted the town. New Richmond is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. The city offers a variety of amenities and activities for residents to enjoy. There are also many historical landmarks and sites located within the city limits.
In 1871, the small town of New Richmond, Wisconsin, was made a station on the Omaha X line of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railroad's network. The line ran northwest from Hudson to New Richmond and directly connected to St. Paul. Construction on the line continued northeast of New Richmond, reaching Spooner in 1879. Although the railroad brought economic growth to the area, it also brought several challenges. One of the biggest challenges was managing the influx of people and goods that came through the town daily. To accommodate the needs of the railroad, the town had to build new warehouses, shops, and hotels. As a result, New Richmond quickly grew into a bustling community.
In addition to a steady stream of newcomers from New England, the city saw an influx of Irish immigrants throughout the 1870s and early 1880s. These families were later followed by many Germans, Norwegians, and a few Swedes throughout the 1880s and 1890s. In 1885, the Wisconsin Central Railroad built a line into the north side of town westward from Chippewa Falls. This made it easy for families to travel to and from New Richmond and helped boost the city's economy. Today, New Richmond is still a thriving community with a rich history. If you're looking for a place to call home, this is it!
