History of Merrill, Wisconsin
Merrill, Wisconsin, is a historic town with a rich logging history. The town was initially named Jenny Bull Falls after the Chippewa Indians who inhabited the area. In 1843, a trading post was constructed near the falls, and John Feely became the first settler. Within four years, a dam was built over the Wisconsin River by Andrew Warren. This dam powered the first sawmill in the area, and others soon followed. In 1870, T.B. Scott purchased Warren’s mill, and the mill soon became increasingly successful. However, in 1899 the mill burned down. Despite this setback, the town of Merrill continued to grow and thrive.
