History of Menomonie, Wisconsin

Menomonie, located in the heart of Red Cedar Valley, was already occupied by Sioux Indians when French fur traders arrived to explore this area around the 1790s. In that period, Jean Baptiste Renault set up a trading post near present-day Menomonee, considered one of the most important historical events for its sheer longevity and influence on future developments within the county's history.

The first permanent white settlement occurred here around 1830 after lumbering became an industry employing many locals who were utterly dependent upon Knapp Stations Company - the most prominent firm- to survive during the panics or depression era; however, it closed down due to bankruptcy in 1873.

This allowed many family farms to emerge, and by the time of the county's organization in 1854, there were already 191 farms.  County's name was chosen in recognition of Menominee Indians who had long inhabited the area before French fur traders, and white settlers arrived and started the lumbering industry, dramatically shaping regional history and economy.

When a post office was established in the town, one of the lumber company founders suggested that they use Menominee as their official name. The word "men" is derived from Algonquin, meaning people or tribe, and refers to rice fields; In contrast, " Roundup," which means gathering food at harvest time - this portion has been translated into English as something like 'to gather together.' Together, these aspects make up what we know today about our forefathers who settled here so long ago: They were simply looking for better opportunities than could be found elsewhere!

In 1882-83 formal incorporation occurred after residents voted on October 5th to become a city; since then, Menomonie has grown into a thriving community with plenty of amenities for residents and visitors alike.

James H. Stout, one of the significant investors in Knapp & Co., had a dream to create an educational system based on 'arts from home and industry.' He also wanted every child- including African Americans-to have opportunities for success through his initial school, which eventually became the University Of Wisconsin-Stout.

In 1848 when James Hempstone was born into poverty, it seemed impossible, but he persevered even though life seemed insurmountable because nothing could stop him. He had a natural aptitude for business; by 1876, he was already one of the most successful young entrepreneurs in Dunn County.

Despite all odds, he became one of the most prolific lumbermen this state has ever seen and one of the largest employers in Northern Wisconsin with his company, J.H. Stout & Co. He was successful and a generous philanthropist whose donations led to the construction of Stout Hall on UW-Stout's campus--which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places!

One cannot talk about Menomonie's history without mentioning one of the most influential people in our town's past: John C. Fremont. He was an explorer, politician, and military officer who played a crucial role during Civil War. In 1862 he came to visit Menomonie while working on a transcontinental railroad survey; during his stay, he gave a speech at what is now called UW- Stout's Jarvis Hall.
