History of Marinette, Wisconsin
Marinette is a northeastern Wisconsin city located on the Menominee River banks. The city has a long history dating back to the early days of the fur trade when a French Canadian trader named Stanislaus Chappu established a trading post on the site. Over time, the trading post evolved into a thriving community, and in 1855 the city was officially incorporated.
Logging was the main occupation in Marinette for many years, and the city was home to dozens of sawmills. After about 1900, lumbering gave way to diversified manufacturing, and today the city is known for its shipbuilding and automotive parts industries, among others. The Marinette County Historical Museum commemorates the area's logging history. The city is also home to the University of Wisconsin-Marinette and the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College campus. Visitors to Marinette can enjoy its 20 parks and 14 waterfalls, and the Theatre on the Bay, which has been hosting productions since 1966.
