History of Hartford, Wisconsin

Hartford's history is reflective of the ever-changing landscape of Wisconsin. It was once a remote trading site along the Rubicon River, inhabited by the Potawatomi and Menominee people. Hartford was incorporated in 1871 and became a city in 1883.

The early years of Hartford were defined by agriculture. settlers like James and Charles Rossman and Tim Hall founded businesses still in this Main Street commercial district, lagging only as far back as 1855 when workers began laying track for what would be called "The Milwaukee La Crosse Railroad." This line-powered much-needed transportation throughout the period up until around 1900, when new technologies helped shift focus away from railroads towards cars after they became more reliable than ever before, thanks mainly to Henry Ford's production line innovations.

By the early 1900s, Hartford had established itself as an industrial producer. After opening in 1906 and providing jobs to hundreds of local workers during World War I (1914-18), Kissel Motor Car Company built cars for both military use and sale in the marketplace until they were bought out by West Bend Aluminum Company, who retooled their plant towards wartime production making powder tanks along with other war materials like rocket containers using metal from melted-down junk vehicle, etc.

In the 1920s, this company was not doing well due to too many fires. Still, after one fire that destroyed most parts needed inside the building, it became more prominent than ever before, producing mufflers used mainly by car manufacturers such as Ford, Chrysler, and Chevrolet. As America became more affluent in the later 20th century, Hartford's economy began to transition again.

Today, the city of Hartford and the independent town of Hartford surrounding it spans Washington and Dodge counties to Milwaukee’s northwest. Despite its growth and development, Hartford has maintained its small-town charm, with a historic downtown that is the community's centerpiece. Residents and visitors enjoy Hartford's many parks, trails, golf courses, public swimming pools, ice skating rinks, and sledding hills. The community also hosts several yearly events, including an art fair, farmer's market, music festival, and holiday parade. Hartford is truly a community for all seasons.
