Grafton is a village in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 11,459 at the 2010 census. Grafton is the largest community in Grafton. Originally known as Milwaukee Junction, Grafton is located on the banks of the Milwaukee River along Interstate 43 and State Highway 60.

History of Grafton, Wisconsin

Grafton is one of the oldest communities in Ozaukee County, dating back to 1838. That year, Timothy Wooden purchased 145 acres of land in the area, eventually becoming Grafton's business district. 

By 1841, development was underway in Grafton, with the area comprised mainly of settlers of German descent. The Village was incorporated in 1896. During the next century, Grafton grew from a predominantly lumber-oriented industry base to a community of many occupations. Residents have always been proud of their village and worked together to make it a thriving and vibrant community. In recent years, Grafton has experienced a renaissance, with new businesses and housing developments popping up all over town. Despite this growth, Grafton has retained its small-town charm and is a great place to live and work. Today, Grafton is a thriving community with a rich history. Visitors can explore the many historic buildings and sites that dot the landscape, including the Octagon House, which was built in 1854. As of the 2010 census, 11,459 people, 4,637 households, and 3,254 families lived in the village. The population density was 2,349.8 per square mile (904.0/km2). There were 4,853 housing units at an average density of 988.4 per square mile (382.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 96.1% White, 0.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.4% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.

There were 4,637 households, of which 32.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 29.7% were non-families. 25.3% of all households comprised individuals, and 12% had someone 65 years or older living alone. The average household size was 2.48, and the average family size was 3.01.
