History of Germantown, Wisconsin

Germantown's history begins in 1836 when German immigrants first settled in the area. The settlers chose the name "Germantown" because many came from the German state of Germantown, Pennsylvania. In 1924, the Village of Germantown was officially incorporated. For the next 40 years, Germantown remained a small farming community. Then, in 1963, Milwaukee County annexed a small piece of land from Washington County to build a landfill. This event marked the beginning of Germantown's transformation into a suburban community. Today, Germantown is a thriving suburb with a population of over 25,000. The Village has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a small German farming community.

In 1963, the Village of Germantown was born when the surrounding unincorporated hamlets of Kuhburg, Willow Creek, Meeker Hill, Goldenthal, Rockfield, Dheinsville, and Germantown decided to merge into one incorporated village. At the time of annexation, the village grew to about 24 square miles. Some of the unincorporated areas wanted to keep their own identity, which is why we have the Town and Village of Germantown. Since 1963, boundaries have continued to change, and over time, the Village of Germantown has grown to encompass over 35 square miles. Germantown is a thriving community with a rich history and a bright future.
