History of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin
Fort Atkinson is a city in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, along the Rock River. The city is named for General Henry Atkinson, who built a temporary fort, Fort Koshkonong, here in 1832 during the Black Hawk War. Fort Atkinson was the first permanent white settlement in what is now Wisconsin and was an important strategic location during the early years of the Midwest.
Fort Atkinson was founded in 1836 by Dwight Foster, who became the town's first white settler. The town grew significantly throughout the mid-19th century with the arrival of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad and the growth of the local industry. The North-Western Manufacturing Company was one of the most important local businesses, and it helped to put Fort Atkinson on the map.
