History of De Pere, Wisconsin
In 1671, Jesuit Missionary Father Claude-Jean Allouez (1622 – 1889) founded the first Christian mission in North America five miles west of Green Bay on top of what is now known as "The rapids" to convert members from both tribes: Ho-Chunk and Potawatomi. French fur traders controlled this region until they were defeated by British forces who took over after 1763, later becoming an American territory following the Removal Act passed through Congress. Jefferson writes that some Native Americans remained in modern times. Most moved away due to over-taxation around 1818.
The people living near the Fox River in 1850 were not just sawing logs and making paper; they also grew crops such as wheat and corn oat barley. They used local water power to run their mills for years before electricity became available further up north.
The forests surrounding this area contained plenty of White Pine trees which produced Planks, while other harder woods like Hickory built houses out West or down south where elm stood alone until oak took its place beside them all along Main Street here in De Pere.
In 1853, the first bridge was built over the Fox River connecting East and West De Pere. The toll bridge cost five cents for pedestrians, ten cents for a horse and buggy, and 25 cents for a team of horses pulling a wagon. The first person to cross the bridge was Judge James Duclon, who later became the first mayor of De Pere.
The City of De Pere was incorporated in 1857 with a population of 1,653. The first mayor was Amos Houde, and the first city clerk was Julius Grignon. The city initially consisted of two wards with six council members. In 1858, the wards were increased to four with eight council members.
The First Baptist Church was established in De Pere in 1851. St. Mary's Catholic Church, the first brick building in De Pere, was built in 1853. The Presbyterian Church was organized in 1854. The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1855.
De Pere became known as "the Island City" because of its location between the east and west banks of the Fox River. East De Pere was known for its lumber mills and paper plants, while West De Pere was known for its tanneries, breweries, and distilleries.
