History of Brown Deer, Wisconsin

The first settlers began to drift into the Brown Deer-Granville area of the Wisconsin Territory in 1835, WW. and WC. Woodward was the first of record. A handful of men from Granville, NY., gave the township its name, meaning large city. In 1838, twenty-six men - the total male population - helped Thomas Faulkner raise a log barn. The first real road through the township was an Indian trail from Milwaukee to Green Bay. This road is now known as Brown Deer Road. It wasn't until 1846 that a bridge was built across the Milwaukee River, making travel easier for settlers and their families. As more and more people moved into the area, farms began to pop up, and small businesses soon followed.

The first recorded settler was George Hook, who arrived in 1841 and built a log cabin near the intersection of present-day Brown Deer and Green Bay Roads. Other early settlers included John Fleming, who operated a tavern out of his cabin, and Patrick Mullen, who built a gristmill along Reiman Creek. In 1846, the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature divided Milwaukee County into seven townships, and Granville Township was created in the northwest corner of the county. The township took its name from Hezekiah Giles Granville, one of the original investors in the Milwaukee and Waukesha Plank Road Company. The first town meeting was held in April 1846, when Hook was elected Town Supervisor. In 1847, the townspeople voted to rename Granville Township to Brown Deer Township after the abundance of deer roaming the area. The name was shortened to Brown Deer in 1918.

The Village of Brown Deer was incorporated in 1955. Before incorporation, the area known as Brown Deer consisted of several farmsteads and a few small businesses along Brown Deer and Green Bay Roads. Incorporation was approved by a vote of 72 to 67, with the primary issue being the need for better streets and sidewalks. The first Village Board consisted of President George H. Stefl, Trustees Henry Wirth, Frank Bartels, Jacob Bartz, John Kehoe, and Clerk Oscar Johnson.

The population of Brown Deer grew rapidly in the years following incorporation, reaching 1,258 by 1960. In 1961, the Village purchased the Brown Deer Golf Course from the Milwaukee County Park Commission. The course was expanded to 18 holes in 1963 and has been a community centerpiece.

In recent years, Brown Deer has undergone significant redevelopment. The Village Center has been revitalized with new businesses and updated infrastructure. New housing developments have brought new residents to the community, and the Village continues to grow and thrive.
