History of Worthington, Minnesota
In the 1850s, white settlers began moving into Sisseton Country. The first to arrive were hunters and trappers, drawn by the abundant game in the area. They were followed by farmers, who established homesteads on the open prairie. The small lake Nicollet named “Okabena” became a popular destination for these early settlers. They came to fish, hunt ducks, and enjoy the natural beauty of the lake and its surroundings.
As more and more settlers arrived in the area, it became clear that a town would need to be established to provide a central point for trade and commerce. In 1857, a group of settlers met at Okabena Lake to discuss the possibility of founding a town. They named Worthington after Colonel Henry Worthington surveyed the area for the government. Worthington was officially platted the year, and a post office was established.
The first years of Worthington’s history were marked by conflict and upheaval. The town was located in Dakota Territory, inhabited by the Sioux Nation. In 1862, the Dakota War broke out, and many settlers were killed or forced to flee the area. After the war, settlement resumed, and the town began to grow.
In 1867, Minnesota became a state, and Worthington was named the county seat of Nobles County. The town continued to grow throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. The early years of Worthington’s history were shaped by two primary industries: agriculture and railroads. The rich prairie soil enabled farmers to grow various crops, including wheat, corn, and soybeans. The railroads brought these crops to market and brought new people and ideas to Worthington.

The advent of the automobile made it possible for people to live in Worthington and work in nearby cities such as Sioux Falls, South Dakota, or Minneapolis, Minnesota. This resulted in a population boom, and Worthington’s population nearly tripled between 1900 and 1920.
The years since Worthington’s founding have been one of progress and growth. Today, Worthington is a thriving community with a diverse economy and a rich cultural heritage.
