History of Willmar, Minnesota
The railroad's arrival in Kandiyohi County in 1869 was a pivotal moment in the history of Willmar, Minnesota. The town was founded by Leon (Chadwick) Willmar, a Belgian agent for the European bondholders of St. Paul and the Pacific Railroad. Willmar's purchase of the title to Section 1 of Willmar Township was the beginning of the community's growth. Many new settlers arrived in Willmar during the 1870s, attracted by the fertile land and abundant timber and game. The Dakota War of 1862 left the township abandoned for several years, but the advent of the railroad brought new life to the area. Residents of Scandinavian heritage are still the majority.
Leon (Chadwick) Willmar, Belgian acting as an agent for the European bondholder of St Paul and Pacific Railroad, purchased the title to Section 1 in 1870. This act would prove instrumental not only in founding the city but also in creating a thriving community with a rich history that we call home today, thanks to his vision & foresight by Leon WIllmars.
The township was abandoned for a few years after the Dakota War of 1862, but the railroad gave the area new life. Willmar's settlers arrived in the 1870s, attracted by the land's fertility, timber & game. The city got its name from Leon Willmar, and its Scandinavian heritage is still prevalent today. Thanks to Chadwick's efforts, Willmar has become a thriving city with a rich history.
One of the city's most historical events happened on July 15, 1930. The notorious Machine Gun Kelly gang committed a daring bank robbery in Willmar, Minnesota. Wielding their Thompson submachine guns, they quickly blasted their way into the Bank of Willmar and made off with approximately $70,000 (worth over $1 million today). Three people were wounded in the robbery, but thankfully none were killed. The Kelly gang was one of the most feared criminal groups of the Prohibition era, and their daring robbery of the Willmar bank was just one of many crimes they committed during their reign of terror. Today, the site of the robbery is marked with a historical plaque, and many residents still remember the event of Willmar.
