History of Victoria, Minnesota
Victoria is a city in Minnesota that has a long and rich history. Michael Diethelm was thought to be the first European settler in the area when he set up a temporary shelter in 1851 not far from the present site of St. Victoria Church. Michael returned to St. Paul where he stayed and worked during the severe winter of 1851-1852. The following spring, he returned with his wife and repaired his shelter. In 1852, Michael’s brother Carl, his Elizabeth, and two children set up a claim not far away. Other European settlers came to Victoria shortly after the Treaty of Mendota took legal effect on February 24, 1853.
The first few years in Victoria were difficult. The settlers had to clear the land, build homes and barns, and plant crops. They also had to deal with harsh winters, diseases, and raids by Native Americans. However, the settlers persevered and eventually established a thriving community.
In 1858, Victoria was named the county seat of Carver County. The city continued to grow in the following years, and by 1880, it had nearly 1,000 people. Victoria was struck by the financial Panic of 1893, which caused many businesses to fail and farmers to go bankrupt. However, the city quickly recovered and grew in the early 20th century. In 1905, Victoria was incorporated as a city.
The years between World War I and II were prosperous for Victoria. Several new businesses were established, and the city's population grew to nearly 2,500 by 1940. The war once again impacted Victoria during World War II. The city was home to a military training camp from 1942 to 1945. After the war ended, Victoria returned to its peaceful way of life.

Interstate 494 and Minnesota State Highways 5 and 7 are three of the main routes in the community. U.S. Highway 212 (Chaska Boulevard) is a four-lane divided highway that goes through the northwest part of town connecting Victoria to the Twin Cities via Interstate 494.
