History of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota
The first settlers in Sauk Rapids faced a dense forest of oak, maple, and basswood trees. In 1851, the first home was built by W.H. Wood. It was a large mansion named Lynden Terrace. Other settlers soon followed, drawn by the promise of cheap land and the potential for economic opportunity. The town was named Sauk Rapids after the rapids just below the mouth of the Sauk River. Soon a general store, hotel, and large jail were built. In 1856, the county seat moved to Watab but returned to Sauk Rapids just three years later. A new courthouse was built, but then finally, in 1897, the seat moved to Foley, where it currently resides. In 1917, the courthouse burned. The first settlers organized a Congregational church, soon followed by Methodist, Episcopalian, and Lutheran churches. The first paper outside St. Paul was the "Sauk Rapids Frontiersman." While Sauk Rapids is no longer the county seat, it remains an essential part of Minnesota history.
1854 is when it all started. In 1876, the first bridge was built but destroyed later that year. However, it was rebuilt in 1879. A flour mill was erected in 1875 but destroyed 11 years later in 1886. Interestingly, 1874 marked the year when Sauk Rapids became the end of the line for the railroad. This is because settlers from far and wide would bring their produce here to ship it. At this time, a six-horse stagecoach made bi-weekly trips between St. Cloud and Crow Wing. Moreover, the first public school on record was built in 1858.
Interestingly, Sauk Rapids remained one of the most critical cities in Minnesota until 1886. It even had a good chance of becoming even more successful. But then, on April 14th, at approximately 4:00 PM, a cyclone struck the town and demolished everything in its path. It even swept through the heart of the City, wiping out all the stores. Consequently, this event changed everything. Sauk Rapids would never be the same.
