History of Red Wing, Minnesota
In the early 1850s, settlers from Mississippi River steamboats came to Red Wing to farm in Goodhue County. They encroached on the traditional territory of the Mdewakanton Sioux. The settlers cleared the land for wheat, the annual crop that could pay the land's cost. Before the railroads were constructed across the territory of Goodhue County, it produced more wheat than any other county in the country. In 1873, Red Wing led the country in the amount of grain sold by farmers. The warehouses in the port of Red Wing could store and export more than a million bushels of wheat. The settlers also built a flour mill, which utilized water power from the Cannon River to grind wheat into flour. This flour mill became one of Red Wing's largest employers and helped attract new residents to the community.
The town's founders wasted no time putting their skills to use and building the infrastructure needed to support a thriving community. Mills, factories, and workshops cropped up, providing homes for skilled artisans from all over New England and the upper Midwest. Businesses started to manufacture everything from farm equipment and clothing buttons to beer and lumber, while service industries like stone-cutting and hospitality began to take root. The St. James Hotel stood today as a reminder of this early period of growth and development when the town was first taking shape. Thanks to the hard work of its earliest residents, the city was able to lay a strong foundation for the future.
