History of Northfield, Minnesota
Northfield, Minnesota, is a small town located on the border of Rice County and Dodge counties. North field was founded by New England settlers known as “Yankees” in 1856 who were part-owners with neighboring colonies. Those colonies formed what became known as The Wheat Frontier," A region rich with agriculture opportunities, including lumber mills powered by the Cannon River waterway.
Now, Northfield is a city with rich history and many attractions. The motto “Cows, Colleges And Contentment” reflects the influence of two liberal arts colleges located in North fatal: Carleton College for cows, the dairy industry thrives here. At the same time, St Olaf serves as an agricultural campus providing livestock production services, including beef cattle ranching.
On September 7, 1876, a group of outlaws attempted to rob the First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota. The infamous James-Younger gang led the raid, which included such notorious criminals as Jesse James and Cole Younger. However, the citizens of Northfield quickly organized a defense, and a gun battle ensued. The outlaws were quickly outnumbered and outgunned, killing two of them. The rest of the gang fled, and their loot was never recovered. The robbery attempt was a complete failure, but it remains one of the most famous incidents in American history.
