As any Minnesota resident knows, the state has a long history of human habitation. The first known white settlers arrived in the area that is now Mankato in 1700, but the town was not officially founded and settled until 1852. The founders were two men from St. Paul: Henry Jackson and Parsons King Johnson. They were two ambitious gentlemen who recognized the potential of what is now Mankato. After surveying the plot and deeming it worthy, the first camp was pitched near where the Masonic temple lies today. The men called for their friends and family, and the town was named on February 14th, 1852. The name chosen was Mankato, after the Indian phrase: Blue Earth. Blue Earth was selected because of the abundant bluish-green clay in the area.

Mankato's rich history begins soon after its establishment. In 1853, the city's first school was built, followed by stores and new buildings. The city continued to grow as settlers arrived from the Minnesota River. By the early 1900s, Mankato had become a bustling hub of entertainment.
