History of North Mankato, Minnesota

Mankato is a historic town located in Minnesota. The city is known for its involvement in the Dakota Conflict, its various historical sites, and its close relation to the Minnesota River. The Hubbard House is one of the most famous landmarks in Mankato. The house was built in 1856 and is one of the oldest standing structures in the town. The house is open to the public and provides tours that guide visitors through its various rooms. The Sibley Zoo is another popular attraction in Mankato. The zoo features a variety of animals, including lions, tigers, and bears. The Minnesota River runs through Mankato and is a popular spot for fishing and swimming. The river is also responsible for delivering many new settlers to Mankato over the years.

As any Minnesota resident knows, the state has a long history of human habitation. The first known white settlers arrived in the area that is now Mankato in 1700, but the town was not officially founded and settled until 1852. The founders were two men from St. Paul: Henry Jackson and Parsons King Johnson. They were two ambitious gentlemen who recognized the potential of what is now Mankato. After surveying the plot and deeming it worthy, the first camp was pitched near where the Masonic temple lies today. The men called for their friends and family, and the town was named on February 14th, 1852. The name chosen was Mankato, after the Indian phrase: Blue Earth. Blue Earth was selected because of the abundant bluish-green clay in the area. 

Mankato's rich history begins soon after its establishment. In 1853, the city's first school was built, followed by stores and new buildings. The city continued to grow as settlers arrived from the Minnesota River. By the early 1900s, Mankato had become a bustling hub of entertainment. The Opera House opened in 1872 and drew in many travelers. Celebrity appearances were joint, and performers such as John L. Sullivan and Roger Miller entertained at the House. The success of Mankato even drew Presidents William Howard Taft and Harry Truman to the city. Today, Mankato is a thriving community with a rich history. North Mankato is adjacent to Mankato and Kasota and lies approximately 60 miles southwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul along Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 14. Dakota Meadows Middle School and Prairie Winds Middle School are the district's two middle schools. Both schools serve students in grades 6-8. Dakota Meadows Middle School is located on East Main Street, just east of North Mankato West High School. Prairie Winds Middle School is located on North Victory Drive, north of North Mankato East High School.
