History of Monticello, Minnesota
Nestled in the heart of southern Indiana, the small town of Monticello has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. The town was first platted in 1854, and a post office soon followed. Monticello officially became a village in 1856. In 1891, the nearby village of Moritzious merged with Monticello, resulting in a population boom. In a commuter exurb, Monticello is approximately 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Minneapolis. It is one of the core cities of the Metropolitan Statistical Area though it is not technically a part of it.
The center of the population of Minnesota is located in Monticello. According to the 2010 census, Monticello has a total area of 11.43 square miles (29.50 km2), all of it land. As of the census of 2010, 12,759 people, 4,795 households, and 3,178 families resided in the city. The population density was 1,112.5 inhabitants per square mile (429.7/km2). There were 5,044 housing units at an average density of 443.0 per square mile (170.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.5% White, 0.8% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.9% Asian, 2.6% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.1% of the population.
