History of Marshall, Minnesota
Marshall is a city in southwest Minnesota. It is the county seat of Lyon County. The city grew rapidly in the 1870s and became an incorporated village in 1876 and a city in 1901.
Marshall was platted in 1872 when the railroad was extended to that point. Lake Marshall Township had been established in the area two years earlier. Before that, the site was occasionally used as a campground. James J. Manton decided on Marshall in honor of Governor William R. Marshall.
Marshall rapidly grew into a thriving community, partly thanks to the railroad. The town became a regional center for agriculture, commerce, and education. In 1879, Marshall was designated as the county seat of Lyon County. The county courthouse was built in 1880 and is still standing today. Numerous other businesses and institutions followed, helping to make Marshall a vibrant and thriving town.
The city continued to grow throughout the 20th century. In recent years, Marshall has become known as a regional center for healthcare and manufacturing.
