History of Inver Grove Heights
Inver Grove Heights is a city in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. It is one of the eastern suburb cities of the Twin Cities.
The first settlers in Inver Grove Heights were French Canadians who arrived in the early 1850s. They settled near the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, which was then called Saint Paul des Prairie du Chien. Inver Grove Heights was named after a prominent hill located near the townsite.
In 1858, the Minnesota Territorial Legislature established Saint Paul as a city, and Inver Grove Heights became a township within Dakota County. The township included present-day Inver Grove Heights, Lilydale, Mendota Heights, and Sunfish Lake. In the late 19th century, the township was subdivided into farms and small villages. The city of Inver Grove Heights was incorporated in 1971.

As of the 2010 census, 33,880 people, 13,471 households, and 8,917 families resided in Inver Grove Heights. The population density was 2,841.0 per square mile (1,096.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 82.5% White, 5.8% African American, 0.4% Native American, 5.9% Asian, 2.5% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.4% of the population.
There were 13,471 households, of which 30.2% had children under 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51, and the average family size was 3.08.
The city's population was spread out with 25.0% under 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years.
The median income for a household in the city was $57,790, and the median income for a family was $70,146. Males had a median income of $50,819 versus $37,063 for females. The per capita income for the city was $26,825. About 3.6% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.5% of those under age 18 and 7.3% of those aged 65 or over.
