History of Hutchinson, Minnesota

The Hutchinson Family Singers were a popular singing group in the mid-19th century. They were made up of John, Asa, and Judson Hutchinson, three brothers from New Hampshire. The Hutchinsons were known for their tight harmonies and emotional performances. In November 1855, they gave a concert in Kansas Territory, near present-day Hutchinson. The town that would eventually be founded bears its name. A post office has been in operation in Hutchinson since 1856. The city was incorporated in 1904.

Elsa Jemne's The Hutchinson Singers is a mural created in 1942 as part of the Federal Art Project. The United States government commissioned the mural as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program to provide employment and improve infrastructure. The Section of Painting and Sculpture oversaw the project, later called the Section of Fine Arts of the Treasury Department. Jemne's mural is an example of egg tempera on plaster, a painting popular during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The mural depicts a group of singing Hutchinson family members, who were performers in the early twentieth century. The painting is currently located in the town's post office.

The Electric Short Line, commonly known as the Luce Line, provided freight and interurban service between Minneapolis and Gluek via Hutchinson. The Luce Line was one of three railroads that served Hutchinson at one time. During the mid-20th century, there was extensive restructuring in the railroad industry, as automobiles caused a decline in passenger traffic and trucking cut into freight movement. Due to these changes, the Luce Line ceased operations in 1971. Although the presence of railroads in Hutchinson has changed over time, the impact that they have had on the city is still evident today.

The Electric Short Line, a mining and logging railway that ran from Hutchinson to Winterset, was purchased by the Minneapolis & St Louis in 1956. This company then passed into private ownership as Chicago North Western Railway until it became part of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNSF) decades later; meanwhile, West condemnations rendered this branch line obsolete following its abandonment in 1968, while eastwards tracks were abandoned 32 years later 1972 due BN's struggle turning profit which led them asking federal government permission 2000. Still, Dakota Rail took control before finally giving way to BNSF.

The Hutchinson Public Library was built in 1901 with a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie. The library is a two-story brick building with Classical Revival and Beaux-Arts influences. It is located on the corner of First Street and Second Avenue in the downtown area. The library has a collection of over 60,000 items, including books, magazines, DVDs, and CDs. It also offers Wi-Fi, computer access, meeting rooms, and various programs for all ages.
