History of Hugo, Minnesota

The Dakota people are a native group who originally inhabited the area around what is now known as the township of Oneka in Minnesota. The township's name, "Oneka," is derived from a Dakota term, "onakan." This term refers to the Dakota people used to harvest wild rice. They would strike the ripe grain stalks with sticks to knock off the grain kernels. The Dakota people used Hugo's many shallow lakes to grow wild rice. This was an essential part of their diet and gave them many nutrients.

The first European settlers began moving into Dakota land in the 1850s. These settlers were primarily of French and Canadian ancestry. They were mainly of French and French-Canadian ancestry. The Dakota people were driven out of their land.

As more and more European immigrants moved into the area, they started opening stock farms and planting hay crops. By 1869, the first road to Saint Paul was completed. In 1875, Saint Paul and Duluth railroad built their station in Hugo.

The railroad building brought about new opportunities for residents to make a living. For example, the lumber industry became a large market in Hugo, with the Inter-State Lumber Co. opening up shop there in the early 1900s. So, as you can see, the railroad had a pretty significant impact on the development of Hugo - both economically and structurally.
