The first settlers arrived in 1852, but the city began to take shape in 1887 with the establishment of the Minneapolis Threshing Machine Company (later renamed Minneapolis Moline). This company employed many Hopkins residents and helped spur the town's growth. In addition, 1887 saw the founding of the West Minneapolis Land Company, which built housing for the workers at Minneapolis Moline. As a result of these two important events, Hopkins rapidly began to evolve from a tiny frontier settlement into a thriving community.

In 1893, 41 residents of what is now West Minneapolis submitted a petition to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners, asking that the village be formed. Following an election, the community was incorporated as the village of West Minneapolis.

The original village was comprised of three square miles, enlarged by annexation to its present size of about four square miles. The population at the time of incorporation was 1,105. Today, the people of West Minneapolis is nearly 13,000.
