This company employed many Hopkins residents and helped spur the town's growth. In addition, 1887 saw the founding of the West Minneapolis Land Company, which built housing for the workers at Minneapolis Moline. As a result of these two important events, Hopkins rapidly began to evolve from a tiny frontier settlement into a thriving community.

In 1893, 41 residents of what is now West Minneapolis submitted a petition to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners, asking that the village be formed. Following an election, the community was incorporated as the village of West Minneapolis.
