History of Hermantown, Minnesota

In 1867, the Kohlts and Acker families filed for homesteads in the area referenced in early Duluth history as “the land up over the hill.” This area would later become Hermantown, Minnesota. Hermantown was named after Herman Kohlt, one of the original settlers in the area. The Kohlts and Acker families joined the long-established Native Americans in the area in 1871. Herman Kohlt served as the first postmaster of Hermantown.

The population of Hermantown grew to 625 by 1900. Ten years later, the population had grown by 300 people, and there were three two-room schools and a town hall. Hermantown had several sawmills, an ice company carving ice from Mogie Lake, a slaughterhouse at the intersection of Haines and Hermantown Roads, and a carrier mail service. 

Herman was founded in 1858 and is located in west-central Minnesota. The community was named for one of its first settlers, Herman Koering. The city grew steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but its growth was set back by the great forest fire of 1918. With the help of the Red Cross, community members worked to rebuild quickly, but the population was trimmed to 842 in 1920.

In the 1930s, the federal government created subsistence housing projects to move impoverished people from larger cities to rural locations. Two communities were selected in Minnesota. Dubbed the Jackson Project, nearly 90 homes were completed by 1937. The influx of new residents helped to jumpstart Herman's growth.
